Gender Empowerment Programming for Female Agents of Mobile Power
Inclusive economic growth means that the work has to be decent and accessible to women as well as men. Unfortunately, according to UN Women, only 63 percent of women aged 25 to 54 are in the labor force compared to 94 percent of men of the same age. Women are still less likely to participate in the labor force and more likely to take the worst jobs in it—insecure, unsafe and poorly paid jobs.
Women selling mobile power are often victimized by inequality in their communities, which seek to disempower and abuse them, undermining their success.
That’s why WHI’s Gender Empowerment Field Officer will support these women with regular individual support and group training. This is intended to build up their confidence, awareness of their rights, and their overall protection.
This project is funded by Mobile Power Ltd., a small UK start-up, with whom WHI originally partnered within 2016 to provide clean & affordable energy to the beyond-the-grid population in Sierra Leone. Now, WHI has been brought into a new project dedicated to empowering women in the field of electricity and mobile power.
Project Goals
- To increase Mobile Power’s female agents to 50% of employed agents, creating job opportunities for women in rural communities
- For each woman in every community of operation to receive training and individualized support
Expected Outcomes
- Protection mechanisms will be built within communities where Mobile Power is operating
- Women will have increased confidence and understanding of their rights
