Brace for Change
Physical Therapist Empowers Children
It can be hard for some of us to understand the reality of life in a least developed country – this is why: we don’t think twice about access to clean water, electricity, garbage disposal, toilets, ways to wash our hands, roads to drive on, even the ability to choose which physical therapist we want to visit. These things are not readily available in least developed countries. In the West, when we or our children need an appointment with a physical therapist, we may have to wait, but we can find one.
Meet Sam
Sam is the only Physical Therapist in Liberia. While visiting Liberia, WHI Canada’s CEO, Tanya Nace was honoured to see hope flourish as Sam is making a life changing difference for children and their families. Not only has he personally trained two physical therapy assistants, but he is also partnering with World Hope’s Enable the Children (ETC) program to test out some small devices that make a significant difference in the lives of children with disabilities.
Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out; judge righteously; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 NRSVUE
EmBrace Transformation
The Cerebral Palsy rate is high among children in West Africa. In the picture above, Sam is holding braces for the legs and hands of children with Cerebral Palsy. These braces were made in Sierra Leone, and he was trained how to use them by the ETC team. Braces bring children with cerebral palsy hope because they help hold joints steady, so children can develop strength and gain mobility. These life changing devices make it possible for children to thrive as they grow.
World Hope Liberia has found a local tailor who is making the braces in country, which are affordable for parents to buy. Having the right tools to succeed is important in anything we do. Sam is equipping children and their families to live life to the full, empowering them with the tools and knowledge they need. We see transformation take place; one child at a time and one family at a time.
