When you’re fifteen years old, life should be about school, friends, family, and fun. Unfortunately, not all 15-year-olds experience the carefree days of being a teenager. Angel* (not her real name) experienced painful circumstances and devastating loss but it’s not the end of her story.

Overwhelming Heartbreak

Angel was betrayed by her boyfriend who recorded their intimate moments then posted the recording on social media. Her devastation deepened when she discovered she was pregnant, then lost her child only days after the birth. Her overwhelming heartbreak reached into every part of her life; from her physical to mental, emotional, and even spiritual life.

Angel felt hopeless. Grief veiled her heart and mind from anything good. With all she had experienced, she couldn’t see the point of returning to school.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV

Hope Restored

After some time passed,  Angel began attending HILOM (healing) sessions with a team of social workers and the hopelessness began to lift, giving way to sparks of hope. She began to see through the deep clouds of grief. She recognized all that her mom and brother were doing to ensure that she could return to school and make a future for herself.

Her life has been transformed. She no longer dwells in the pain of the past but is moving forward, with restored dignity and hope. Angel is back in school. She is not alone. She has an entire network of support. From family members to her caring community that surrounds her, to World Hope International (Philippines) social workers and a government team who are serving her.

“It wasn’t just about talking. It was the first time I felt safe. Seen. Like maybe my story didn’t end with the pain.” Angel

A Thriving Future

Angel’s dignity has been restored; she is thriving in her education and is dreaming of a better future. Angel has hope.

The terrible things that happen to us do not have to define who we are or how our stories end. Instead, they can become part of our story, declaring that we have overcome and we are survivors.
