Healing from abuse is a long journey. For Jamaima* her journey of healing began when she was referred to World Hope International Philippines. World Hope staff began working closely with her family and community to help create a safe and nurturing environment as she reintegrated back into daily life.
Jamaima’s family participated in family strengthening activities which use trauma informed care to promote understanding, healing, and connection between survivors and non-offending family members.
Among these activities was a simple yet meaningful exercise that brought the family together. Family members were invited to write what they were thankful for on paper leaves and assemble them into a shared wreath. More than creating a decoration, the activity fostered a culture of gratitude within the home.
Gratitude is not only a feeling but also a practice that nurtures healing and hope. When families intentionally pause to recognize their blessings together, they strengthen emotional resilience and deepen their connections with one another.
Jamaima also received educational assistance giving her the encouragement and resources she needed to move forward with confidence. She enrolled in school but was years behind her peers. And then, an idea was born; maybe she didn’t need to start at the beginning. Maybe she could leap forward.
Our social workers suggested that she speak with her teacher about taking an acceleration exam—one that could place her straight into Grade 7. With guidance and encouragement, she enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), successfully passed the ALS qualifying examination, and eventually graduated. That achievement marked the beginning of an exciting chapter.
Jamaima is now in Grade 7, but she’s not just attending classes. She’s vying for a seat in the Student Council—as the Grade 7 representative. She wants to lead. She wants to serve. She wants to grow.
Her progress reflects how consistent support and strong family connections can help a child heal, grow in confidence, and realize their potential. Jamaima’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when children receive encouragement and opportunities to thrive. Her journey reminds us that hope can flourish when communities come together to care, invest, and believe in a child’s future.
But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
