Have you ever wondered about the long-term impact your giving to clean water programs will have? Does water really make a difference for real people in real places when you give?
One of World Hope International’s core values is sustainable transformation. Drilling deep-borehole wells is one way we achieve this core value. When you give to clean water programs, you are not just providing water for one person or family for a day, a week, or a year, but for entire communities for generations. Our teams of specialists start by listening to stories and learning what specific needs exist from the experts – the ones who live in the communities we serve.
In 2011, Makoth village received a well. Prior to the well being drilled, women and children walked 3.2 km each way to fetch water from a dirty riverbed. Water that was contaminated with animal feces, bacteria, and parasites. Villagers who consumed this water suffered from cholera and parasitic diseases. Diarrhea was a constant symptom of the poor water quality.
In anticipation of the well being drilled in this community, World Hope team members worked with them to establish a village water committee. They created bylaws to ensure proper use of the well and appointed a maintenance and pump manager for the site. The community is equipped to take leadership of the new well. Every household would pay 40 cents a month to help maintain the well and pay for parts as needed.
In January 2026, the well stopped working just before Tanya Nace, World Hope International Canada CEO arrived in the village. Immediately, the water committee mobilized. They called their local water specialist to come, gathered the parts needed, and began working together to fix the problem. By the time she arrived, the team was repairing the water point, working to get water flowing again. Tanya shares, “What a joy to see the water committee in action!”
Fifteen years later and the well that was drilled 30 meters deep, consistently provides clean, safe water to the community, even in the driest seasons. Access to clean water has drawn people to the community because water is life. It provides stability, safety, and health to generations. Children and women are no longer carry the burden of fetching contaminated water. Families are healthier. There is hope in the village of Makoth.
For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.
