After School Programs Ignite Hope

MeyLy’s Confidence Grows

In rural Cambodia, after school programs are a source of opportunity and hope for Bunong children and their families. In Grade 6, MeyLy joined after-school programs, run by World Hope International.  She excitedly took every opportunity available. MeyLy joined Jahoo Club (conservation), Computer Club, English Club, Leadership Club, Creative Arts and Performance Club, and Sports for Development. Prior to her participation, she was struggling with her studies. Now, she feels more confident in her academic journey, and also in her everyday life. 

In her Creative Arts and Performance Club, she learns traditional Bunong dance and song, performing at community and school events. She is learning the history of her people and sharing it with others. MeyLy recognizes that her confidence and compassion have grown, she is learning to be responsible and to keep herself safe. 

Big Dreams for MeyLy’s Future

MeyLy’s mom, Bopha, is excited for her daughter’s future. She sees her excelling and is proud hearing her speak English. Bopha herself is impacted watching her daughter perform traditional Bunong dance and sing traditional songs. She wants to see her children educated and thrive in life and is committed to helping them graduate high school. Her own experience as an agricultural labourer is challenging, and their family struggles to make ends meet.  

All the after-school program teachers are Bunong.  Bopha sees them as role models for MeyLy.  They have inspired her to dream big and to one day become a teacher.
