More Than Just Clean Water 

In places around the world, open defecation, inadequate handwashing, and improper water storage leads to poor health and disease.  Entire communities are vulnerable too because they do not know the dangers and health risks of these behaviours. But there is hope! 

Areas of Impact 

World Hope International works in 3 impact areas: Clean Water, Disability and Health, and Protection to create sustainable transformation in vulnerable communities. Clean Water holistically addresses people’s wellbeing through programs that also improve community sanitation practices.   

Community Led Total Sanitation 

After Community Health Worker, Alimamy, received training using the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach, he got straight to work building his community’s first latrine. Following the training, regular household visits, hygiene demonstrations, and community engagement continued to encourage improved sanitation habits. Now all 20 households in his village have latrines and handwashing stations! 

In Denanie, CLTS is transforming lives by mobilizing community members to construct and use latrines, install handwashing facilities, and adopt improved environmental sanitation practices.  The community owns the process and is making ongoing improvements.  Follow-up visits by our teams continue to reinforce good sanitation and hygiene practices. 

Sustainable Success 

Now, 100% of households in both communities have access to latrines and handwashing facilities. Open defecation has been largely eliminated, hygiene awareness has increased, and the community environment is cleaner, safer, and healthier. By empowering local champions with knowledge, mentorship, and community support, sustainable behaviour change is possible!
