When Teddy joined World Hope’s Enable the Children (ETC) Program in 2018, he had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus. His head was very large and heavy, making it difficult for him to control it. He couldn’t sit independently, and even the simplest movements required tremendous effort.
Over the years, Teddy received regular physiotherapy, supportive equipment, occupational therapy, school support, and psychosocial care. His family was never alone on the journey either. Teddy’s mother faithfully attended our family support meetings, where she found encouragement from other parents facing similar circumstances, while Teddy became a regular participant in our inclusive beach outings. These opportunities not only supported Teddy’s development but also strengthened his mother’s confidence and determination to continue the therapy and exercises at home.
Little by little, Teddy reached milestones that once seemed impossible. He gained head control, learned to sit independently, began crawling, and was eventually provided with crutches that gave him greater independence and confidence.
Our West Africa Regional Disability and Rehabilitation Director, Anna Vines, has known Teddy since he first entered the program. Given the severity of his condition as a young child, she knew the road ahead would be long. Children who have not begun walking by around five years of age are statistically much less likely to achieve independent walking, so while there was always hope, she also understood just how remarkable it would be if Teddy eventually reached that milestone.
Then one day, our team sent Anna a video.
It was both ordinary and extraordinary.
Teddy was walking—without his crutches!
It was an unforgettable moment.
As Anna reflected afterwards, “Working with children with disabilities teaches you never to place limits on a child’s potential. So many things work against these children—from stigma and discrimination to poverty, illness, and limited access to healthcare and education. Yet Teddy overcame so much. His journey is a testament to his own determination, his mother’s incredible perseverance, the unwavering commitment of our therapy team, and God’s grace.”
Today, Teddy is walking independently, opening up new opportunities for his schooling, play, and participation in his community.
Stories like Teddy’s don’t happen overnight. They are the result of years of faithful support, consistent therapy, and people who choose to invest in children for the long term.
