For a future of opportunity

Quality education for all children lays a foundation for a healthy and successful life—and for reducing poverty, suffering, and injustice.

Give Hope

We believe that education is the key to transforming communities and reducing poverty, suffering, and injustice worldwide.

Education plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a healthy and successful life, providing people with the skills they need to overcome poverty, protect themselves from injustices and disease and live lives of freedom and opportunity. Educated citizens are citizens who are empowered to act as advocates for economic and social change.  An educated population promotes a better-educated nation and an improved social structure.

In Sierra Leone, girls with only a primary school education are three times more likely to be married before age 18 than those with a secondary education or higher.

Human Rights Watch

There are still 758 million illiterate adults worldwide, most of whom are women.

One in five school-aged children, adolescents and youth—a total of 263 million people around the world—are not in school.

What we’re doing about it

We promote positive, inclusive access to education—for those with disabilities, ethnic minorities, victims of trafficking, and the extreme poor.

Early Childhood Development

In partnership with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, WHI supports the establishment of community-run Early Childhood Development Centers and promotes healthy parenting behaviors in northern Sierra Leone.

Child Education

WHI’s work in child education in Sierra Leone, the Philippines, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and child sponsorship programs around the world provides the essential resources and support for children to receive a quality education.

Adult Education

In low-income countries, each additional year of schooling can increase a person’s income by 10%. WHI’s adult education work in Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina supports a better-educated workforce and more stable economy.

Family Education

In Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, WHI is engaging families in discussions to learn about topics such as parenting, domestic violence, communication, family budgeting, and community involvement.
